Build a Dream

Project: Build a Dream, sponsored by the McHenry County Latino Coalition, is a non-profit program aiming to assist impoverished families with housing and education.

Last year, Project: Build a Dream coordinated an effort in response to addressing the immediate needs of Claudia, a Crystal Lake mother of three young children, who after her life partner and father of her children was deported from the United States, returned to Mexico from McHenry County.   The family’s lifestyle changed drastically from what they experienced in McHenry County for over 8 years.  Their home was only partially built, with no roof, windows, electricity, plumbing and only a dirt floor.

Thanks to the compassionate and generous response of our community here, a team of volunteers went to Mexico last fall to assist in completing construction of the family’s modest home and began to make it safe and suitable for children and to help provide the family with the lifelong means to be able to care for the three boys, Pedro, Jose and Miguel.  Additionally, financial support was given to help pay for the children’s education.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who gave of their time, talent and treasure.

Much was accomplished from this initial effort—a roof built, and flooring, electrical and plumbing installed on the main floor and a much needed second story built.  While the family’s living condition has improved significantly, there is still work to be completed, and therefore our team of volunteers will be returning to Mexico this October to complete the second floor of the home.  We need your help.

This project and family is close to my heart.  I am one of the team members who is truly honored to be returning to Mexico.  Every member on the team has made a donation and we humbly ask that you consider helping this family in need.  Perhaps you may have thoughtfully contributed last year (and if so thank you!), or maybe you are learning about this family for the first time.  Either way, I would like you to consider lending a hand by giving a financial gift of support.  Your gift will directly impact this family by assisting in providing adequate housing and education.  It will help to gladden the hearts of another and ease some of the day to day struggles present.  Project: Build a Dream has no paid staff so 100% of your donation will go to helping this family.

I would be happy to talk with you further about involvement with Project: Build a Dream. I invite you to contact Linda Baumert, project coordinator, at 847-376-0822 for further information. You can click on the link at left labeled Donation Form.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated.  Together we can build dreams and provide help and hope to others in their time of need.

Yours in mission,

The Build a Dream Volunteer Team

PS. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To share often and much . . . To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded.”

I hope you will choose to help this family.

Build a Dream Project is a cooperative effort supported by many individuals and churches in the area.

None of this would be possible if it were not for the generous support and encouragement of the Volunteer Center of McHenry County and The McHenry County Latino Coalition.
